FALLEN soldiers who appear on a village war memorial have had their names engraved on poppies and displayed around the structure.

The names of the 94 brave Monk Bretton men who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War, have been emblazoned on plastic poppies attached to fencing around the war memorial garden on Cross Street.

It is the culmination of several years' hard work of a project spearheaded by local Couns Steve Green, Ken Richardson and Margaret Sheard to restore the memorial's two columns and surrounding area to its former glory.

They were helped by pupils from St Helen's school and a scout group from the Rotherham Road branch.
