DISAPPOINTMENT was hard to hide on the faces of those who had braved the cold weather to see Barnsley’s Christmas lights switched on - not knowing it had been cancelled.

A few families had turned out for the annual crowd pleaser on Wednesday which was abandoned with just hours to go because of fears for public safety due to strong winds.

The lights have now been turned on and the council spokeswoman couldn’t confirm whether the event will be held at a later date.
