FRACKING licences announced by government yesterday will cover most of the Barnsley area.

It will bring the controversial process to release gas from deep below the earth’s surface to Barnsley for the first time.

Yesterday a licence was granted to the firm Ineos which includes Barnsley town centre and surrounding districts. It is in addition to a licence announced for the Dearne area back in August.

Steve Woodhouse, of protest group Frack Aware, said: “It is time to mobilise the troops. I would urge everyone in Barnsley to Google ‘dangers of fracking’ and to visit the Frack Free South Yorkshire website.”

The government and industry insists fracking is safe and will be tightly regulated.
