Ivan Toney is glad to be part of a Barnsley attack which he believes is more suited to challenging for promotion to the Championship than fighting relegation to League Two.

The 19-year-old striker, who is on loan from Premier League Newcastle United, has netted in each of his last two matches playing alongside Sam Winnall up front with Adam Hammill and Marley Watkins on the wings. The Reds have scored in all seven of the games since Toney and Hammill arrived at the club with four of them being wins.

"We know each other's games now," Toney told the Chronicle. "With Adam you just have to get him one-on-one with a defender to do his trickery then put it in the box for you.  The same with Marley who can beat a man and put it in the box.

"Myself and Sam are getting a lot of one-twos going in and around the box and defenders can't handle us. We just need to keep that going.  There are other players on the bench as well who are very good and will push us and make sure we are at our best to keep our places in the starting line-up."

Toney netted in the 3-2 success at Colchester on Saturday which moved the Reds from the bottom of the table to 21st. He believes the rise will continue, adding: "All the lads have positive minds and we should be in the play-offs, if not pushing for automatic promotion. I am sure we will fly up the table.

"It was good to score and get the win. We sat back a bit too much at 3-0 and if you don't defend well you get punished. "But we managed to see the win out then take three points back to Barnsley."

Toney's first goal for Barnsley was at Wigan earlier this month, after he tweeted 'it's about time I scored' that morning. He said: "That was funny. I was going to tweet before the Colchester game but I didn't have time. Hopefully I will have a lot more goals to tweet about in my loan spell with Barnsley."

The Reds play Wigan again tomorrow in the league after knocking them out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. He said: "I am sure they will want to get their own back on us but we won't go down without a fight. We will go into the game very confident and I think we can get the right result."

Toney last week extended his loan until January. The former Northampton striker said: "We'll have to wait and see whether I stay longer. Newcastle are keeping an eye on me. My end goal is to get into their side but I will be judged on how many goals I get for Barnsley.I wasn't scoring in the first few games of the loan.  I was still playing a part but, in my game, I'm not happy unless I am not scoring. I have got two in two and hopefully I can get more. Getting first team football is the main thing. Barnsley is a great club and I am happy to be here."
