Dropping captain Alfie Mawson to the bench on Saturday was a simple decision says head coach Lee Johnson.

The 21-year-old centre-back had started all 28 games since signing for the Reds in the summer but had made several errors in recent weeks. He was replaced by Kevin Long, who returned from suspension.

"It wasn't a difficult decision to put Alfie on the bench because he needed a rest," Johnson told the Chronicle.

"He's played an awful lot of football and been captain with a lot thrust upon him. You look at the GPS data and all the testing we do and he has been dipping physically for the last three or four weeks now. Longy coming back gave us the chance to rest Alfie."
