THE LOLLIPOP man outside a Wombwell school will not be replaced despite a 100-signature petition amid concerns from parents about road safety.

The crossing patrol for St Michael and All Angels school retired at the end of last year, but after a check in September, Stonyford Road was found to no longer meet the criteria needed for a patrol and no-one has been recruited to fill the position.

A petition was submitted to the council in November via Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher’s office called for the reinstatement of a patrol outside the school.

The petition was acknowledged at a meeting of Barnsley Council’s cabinet this week, where members approved the recommendation that, in accordance with national policy about the future of the school crossing patrol service, it would not be possible to recruit into the post.
