BARNSLEY MP Dan Jarvis has called on the Prime Minister to do more to tackle winter deaths.
In a debate in the House of Commons, Mr Jarvis said 43,000 people had died last winter as a result of the cold.
The latest figures for Barnsley showed there was a drop in the number of people who died from 160 to 130, but the figures for Yorkshire rose to 4,100 in the last financial year compared to 1,810 deaths in 2013/14.
Mr Jarvis said: “Some 43,000 people tragically died last winter. Does the Prime Minister agree that that is not only appalling but avoidable? Why does he think so many people are dying needlessly in our country, and what will he do to stop it happening?”
