MEMORIES of ex-pupils of Doncaster Road School, Stairfoot, (otherwise known as Ardsley Junior and Infants School) are still arriving at the Chronicle offices following earlier features in the paper.

Rita Thomas (nee Gilliland) was a pupil at the school in 1939, the year the Second World War broke out. She remembers Miss Charlton and Miss Parr, who was headmistress at the time.

Other photographs submitted by Mrs Thomas show four pupils from the school who entered the National Needlework Competition organised by ‘Teachers World’. On one of the pictures the girls are showing their applique embroidery work. They are: Iris Parkin, Rita Gilliland, Gwenda Ibbotson, Vera Tingey.

On the other photograph some of the girls who entered the competition are seen receiving their award winning certificates from the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley. The girls: Rita Gilliland, Freda Hinchcliffe, Iris Parkin and Vera Tingey.
