COUNCIL leader Sir Steve Houghton has offered reassurance that ambitious plans to regenerate the town centre are not in danger of going over budget.
The £50m Better Barnsley scheme to transform the town centre is underway but a report seen by the ruling cabinet on Wednesday shows a further £5.1m is needed to fund a bridge over Jumble Lane and additional public realm works - and no resources have been set aside for this.
Coun Houghton told the Chronicle a ‘package of funding streams’ will help meet this extra cost and the council is in negotiations with Network Rail, which is expected to contribute to the largest portion - the £4m bridge.
