FIREFIGHTERS have called for the demolition of a derelict pub after a spate of arson attacks by rock-hurling youths.

The Fighting Cocks on Wombwell Road, Platts Common, was set alight six times in four days between April 26-30.

Fire crews needed police protection after they were attacked with stones at the second fire on Saturday night.

Brampton station manager Andy Heald said: “It’s not on. We are there to provide a service - putting a fire out that should never have been a fire - and then we are getting pelted with stones in the process.”

He was also concerned that the deliberate fires, including one on Wednesday night, were draining resources.

He said: “The problem is that where we are messing around with derelict buildings, it is taking us away from other potentially serious incidents.
