WORK to transform one of the chapels in Wombwell Cemetery into a community hub is well underway, and the community group which runs it is looking for volunteers to staff it when it opens.

The Friends Of Wombwell Cemetery, which managed to secure £145,000 to get the project underway, is looking for volunteers to help out when the facility opens in May.

Everything from tour guides and tea makers to a treasurer is needed, and all the training required will be undertaken in-house with the group.

The Friends of Wombwell Cemetery was originally set up as a watch group in 2002, when an 87-year-old lady was mugged visiting her husband’s grave. It has now evolved into a group which takes care of the cemetery and restores the buildings within it.
