SMOKERS in Barnsley spend more than £1,000 per year on smoking, figures have shown.
According to the council, smokers spend on average £1,323 per year.
Julia Burrows, director of public health in Barnsley, said this amount would have a significant impact on poverty for families in the town.
She said 32 per cent of households with a smoker fall below the poverty line and if these smokers were to quit, 2,140 households would be lifted out of poverty.
