A VETERAN from Swinton has been presented with the highest honour a military man can receive from the French establishment.

Garry Ardron, 92, of Greno Road, was on board HMS Argonaut at D Day and fired shells at the Germans defending the beaches.

He went on to fight in the Pacific too and helped return prisoners of war home.

Last week the former scrapyard worker was invited to a ceremony in Rotherham and was awarded the Legion D’Honneur medal from the honorary consul for France Mr Jeremy Burton.

Garry told the Chronicle: “It was a great day and really overwhelming.”
