George Williams has been offered a new deal at Barnsley but the Reds have been saving detailed contract negotiations until the end of the season.
Williams, 23, is one of several senior players whose deals will expire in the summer like fellow full-back Aidy White and Player of the Year Adam Hammill. Youngster George Smith has also been offered an extension.
Chief executive Ben Mansford said: "We won't get into contract talks until the last ball has been kicked but George knows we want to keep him and we have offered him a new contract."
Head coach Paul Heckingbottom added: "We have got a couple more players out of contract and that might go on to the summer.
"What we can't afford to do is get any sort of distractions at this moment in time. The first team players' focus is on the rest of the season because that is going to determine what sort of contracts they get."
