A CHARITY set up in memory of a Barnsley mum who died of cancer has made its first award - to another young mum with the disease.
Elaine Kennedy-Martin, of Birdwell, was diagnosed with a rare form of bowel cancer in 2003 and despite intensive chemotherapy died in December, 2005.
Her husband Paul Martin, 34, said he wanted some good to come from her death and wanted a legacy for their daughter Leoni to remember her mum by.
He said: "Watching someone you love die in front of you is the worst thing. I was inspired by Elaine's courage and determined for something good to come of everything bad that happened.
"We had just got married and had a child then everything was taken away. It's terrible and day-to-day family life becomes extremely difficult especially if you cannot afford to do things."
So, he created the Lainey K campaign in Elaine's memory - and set a target of raising £10,000 by the end of 2006 to help families in a similar plight.
The campaign made its first award this week to Monk Bretton mum Clare Genther, 32. She is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma and the charity is paying to send her 18-month old twins, Alfie and Charlie, to nursery.
Clare, who has a third son, Josh, eight, said her treatment tires her out for days, making it difficult to care for the twins. She said the cash will make a big difference.
"I have to have chemotherapy for six to eight months. It has become very tiring for the few days after treatment and sending the twins to nursery will give me a bit of a breather."
