MARY Spencer slept sitting bolt upright all night before heading off to see the Queen on Sunday because she didn’t want her hair to get messed up.

It paid off because she was still looking her best when she shook hands with Prince Harry at the street party on The Mall for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

Mary, 90, of Ravenholt, Worsbrough Bridge, attended The Patron’s Lunch event with her granddaughter Sally Needham who acquired the tickets through her job as a sports coach with the Football Association. It was celebrate the Queen’s patronage of more than 600 charities and organisations.

“It was just so wonderful I will never forget it,” said Mary, who was given ‘the red carpet treatment’ everywhere she went for the weekend. She was upgraded to First Class on the train journey to London, her hotel room was decorated with balloons, and she was given VIP service at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant.
