MARGERY Rayner says she daren't take her 18 -month-old granddaughter to the park at the end of her street because it is unsafe.
She claims the play area is littered with broken glass and yobs have set fire to the swings.
Vandals have also sprayed graffiti across the climbing frame at the park off Greenside.
Margery, of Park Close, Mapplewell said: "We live a stone's throw away from the park but can't use it because it is in such a state. Our granddaughter is 18- months -old so she can't understand why she can't go. "The baby swings have been burnt out and there is glass everywhere. It is just not safe.
"The council is spending all that money on the football pitches there but seem to be neglecting the play area."
Darton East councillor John Parkinson said the council had spent a considerable amount improving the park and further work was planned.
He said: "I am aware of the complaints regarding youths causing problems. We have had numerous meetings with the relevant authorities and I am pleased to say that within the next few months facilities will be improved.
"I should point out that the council has spent a lot of money already and I can assure the public that yobs will not be allowed to spoil the enjoyment of the park for the people of Mapplewell."
