FIRE-FIGHTERS rescued a man from a first-floor bedroom window after paint was poured through his letter box and set alight.

John Mellor, 48, of Springfield Road, Hoyland, was awoken by his dog barking and called the fire brigade at around 3am yesterday.

He was taken to Barnsley District hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

Next-door neighbours Alan and Kath Dyer saw the fire crew help him down a ladder before saving his pet Alsatian, Jazz.

Alan, 79, said: “First thing I heard was the sound of a diesel engine running so I got out of bed to see what was going on. There was police, fire engines and an ambulance.”
