A BARNSLEY man made an emotional trip to the trenches of the Somme near to where his uncle died 100 years ago.
Colin Bell and wife Audrey, from Caulk Lane, Swaithe, made the journey to the Sheffield Memorial Park to pay tribute to his uncle Percy Bell, who had died as one of the Barnsley Pals on the bloody battle’s first day.
The park marks the spot where many of the area’s men, who had volunteered to head into battle, were mown down by German machine gun fire.
And whilst the couple were there, they met two members of the Barnsley Pals Scooter Club, who were wearing shirts bearing the names of all the Barnsley men who had given their lives in the battle.
