A BREAST surgeon accused of 'botching' operations by patients is still picking up a salary of up to £122,000 nearly a year after being suspended by Barnsley Hospital.

The Chronicle has learned the General Medical Council is unlikely to decide if it will take against consultant Puvan Markandoo until next year. Until then she remains on full pay.

The GMC is considering complaints about Ms Markandoo’s conduct both in and out of theatre after being notified by the hospital in January.

A GMC spokesman said it could take between 12 to 15 months for members to decide whether to hold a fitness to practice hearing. But he admitted they could decide there is no case to answer if the issue is not considered serious enough.

He said Ms Markandoo’s licence to practice has been restricted which means she cannot operate unsupervised and she has been told to seek help on surgical techniques and ‘interpersonal’ skills.
