THE Football Assocation’s former ‘bung buster’ Graham Bean told the Chronicle he was not surprised to see allegations of corruption in football emerge this week - until Barnsley FC’s good name was drawn into the scandal.
Barnsley’s assistant manager Tommy Wright was sacked yesterday over the allegation he accepted a £5,000 bung after agreeing to help a fake Far Eastern firm which wanted to profit from transfer deals.
He was filmed allegedly accepting an envelope of money in return for agreeing to help persuade Barnsley to sign players from the firm and encourage players to sign up with an agent.
Former Barnsley CID detective Graham became FA compliance officer and for a time it was his job to root out such irregularities highlighted by this week’s string of revelations following sting operations by the Daily Telegraph.
