WH Smith is ‘disappointed’ to be losing its presence in Barnsley town centre and is looking for somewhere else to go, the company has told the Chronicle.

It is one of the town’s oldest retailers and is among a dozen on Cheapside and May Day Green having to leave the Metropolitan Centre in January so the council can press ahead with refurbishment of the building as part of the Better Barnsley regeneration.

WH Smith has been in Barnsley since 1906, opening up as bookseller on Market Hill where it remained until 1973 before moving to the Metropolitan Centre.

A spokesman for the retailer said: “We can confirm the WH Smith store in Barnsley will close in January due to the major plans for the redevelopment of the town centre, which includes the Metropolitan Centre from which we currently trade.”
