Barnsley are desperate to end their 12-week wait for a home win when they welcome struggling Wigan Athletic to Oakwell tomorrow.

The Reds won their first three Championship games after promotion, but have not triumphed in six at home since the 4-0 thrashing on Rotherham United on August 27. Although they have gained impressive wins at Preston, Wolves and Brentford in that time, Barnsley's only two home points in September, October and November have been courtesy of late equalisers against Aston Villa and Bristol City.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom told the Chronicle: "It would be great to get that home win and end a long wait for the fans. "The majority of our fans see us play at home and they have seen some good performances recently but ultimately they want to see wins, and so do we.

"It doesn't matter whether the points come at home or away, they are still points. But, in terms of a feeling, it is better to win at home and send everyone home happy."

Wigan are 22nd out of 24 in the Championship with 14 points from 16 games so far. As they are the highest-placed of the three sides in the relegation zone, tomorrow's match represents a chance for Barnsley to move further away from the scrap at the bottom.

The Latics' away form this season has been particularly poor, with just five points and eight goals in eight matches on their travels. The 13th-placed Reds are currently seven points ahead of the bottom three and five off the play-off spots.

Heckingbottom said: "It is an opportunity to increase the gap between us and the bottom three but, at the moment, we are looking at the teams above us and trying to catch them. I honestly don't really look at the league table, it's just about winning the next game. If you keep getting good results you are increasing the gap between the teams at the bottom and closing in on the ones at the top."

The Reds have a poor record against Wigan at Oakwell, never beating them there in the league. Although they won at the DW Stadium twice last season, in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and the final league game, they have not beaten the Latics at home since an FA Cup tie in 1954.
