THE Barnsley-born former Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, David Moody, has received an honorary doctorate for outstanding public service.

The former Wilthorpe Primary School pupil received his award from Sheffield Hallam University on the first day of graduation ceremonies at Sheffield City Hall on Monday.

David had a long career in the steel industry before being appointed High Sheriff of South Yorkshire in 2003. Towards the end of his year as High Sheriff he was invited to take up the post of Lord Lieutenant and assumed office in April 2004.

During his 11-year tenure he hosted 64 royal visits to the county including Princess Anne’s visit to the town in 2014.

After stepping down from his role as Lord Lieutenant in 2015, he was given the honour of Freeman of the Borough of Barnsley, where he has lived for all but two years of his life.
