CONFUSED campaigners reacted furiously after receiving contradictory messages from the council about the future of a Hoyland landmark.

Hoyland Lowe Stand was included on a list of assets to be auctioned as part of an £85 million sell-off over the next three years.

A petition containing 895 signatures was presented to Coun Jim Andrews on Monday but the organisers were told the monument was already "off the list.”

The Labour councillor repeated the claim during a public meeting in Hoyland Town Hall later the same day.

And he also told the Chronicle: “I just asked for it to be taken off the list and it was.”

But petition organiser Andy Turner, 43, of Stonehill Close, Hoyland said he was unaware of the developments.

He said: “Conveniently Barnsley council now say it has been taken off the list but we we were never notified about this and neither were the other councillors.”

On Tuesday assistant director of property and procurement Alan White, confirmed this was not the case.
