MORE than £500,000 has been forked out by Barnsley Council following hundreds of accidents involving its fleet of commercial vehicles.
There has been more than 300 accidents involving vehicles from the council’s 394-strong fleet over the past six years, new figures obtained by the Chronicle show.
The council’s fleet includes 81 LGVs, which are vehicles such as bin wagons, tippers, gritters, sweepers and 313 vans and pick-ups which are used on housing and building maintenance jobs, as well as ground and highways work. It also has a specialist fabrication vehicle.
The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act and covering each year from 2011 to 2016, show 324 vehicles owned or leased by the council were involved in accidents.
