FOUR of the eight locations being mooted for a parkway station for HS2 would ‘significantly benefit’ Barnsley, according to the council leader.

Coun Sir Steve Houghton said a parkway station on the borough’s border could be a big boost to places like Goldthorpe.

The majority of the preferred route for the second phase of the high speed rail link has been confirmed, but not the final route through South Yorkshire. A consultation on the route is due to end in March.

This week, a list of eight locations was revealed which included Hickleton, Clayton, Hemsworth and Mexborough.

Also on the shortlist is Bramley, Wales and Hooton Roberts in Rotherham and Fitzwilliam in Wakefield.
