TIME has been called on booze-fuelled crime in Barnsley after the town was chosen to be part of a new government crackdown to make the streets safer at night.

Barnsley has been chosen as one of the Home Office’s Local Alcohol Action Areas and will be supported by government to implement a plan that will bring together the council, health bodies, police and businesses to address problems linked to alcohol.

The town has experienced a rise in alcohol misuse. There were 1,887 hospital admissions in 2015/16 as a direct result of alcohol, 17 per cent more than in 2010/11.

The number of admissions for men and women was flagged up as a priority concern by the council last year with latest data showing rates for women hit a seven year high and for men the rate was at its highest in four years.
