PROPOSALS have been announced for the restoration or reconstruction of Locke Park Tower.

The Friends of Locke Park are preparing an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to try to raise enough money to reopen the "iconic tower" for visitors to the 130-year-old park.

The tower dominates the area and before its closure visitors could enjoy spectacular views of South, West and East Yorkshire. It was said you could see three other counties, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, on a clear day.

Group chairman David Allen said:"This is one of Barnsley's landmarks.

"But it has a list and it's known as the leaning tower of Barnsley. I think it would have to be rebuilt and you are talking about a seven figure sum. The stone work and everything else would have to be similar to what is there at the moment.

"It's an iconic tower, a landmark which can be seen from some distance. If it was lit up at night it would create a beacon."
