AN ENTIRELY new theatre will be created at the heart of the town centre as part of major new £5m plans to bring the vast unused parts of The Civic back into use.
A 316-seat theatre known as the Assembly Room already exists in what was formerly the ‘upper third’ of the grand old 800-seat Civic after a new floor was built where the old dress circle used to be.
But is only accessible from the back entrance on Hanson Street and even though it has been open since 2009 and played by some of the biggest names in comedy, music, theatre and dance, there are still some in Barnsley who don’t know it’s there.
As part of £5m plans unveiled in the Chronicle last week, a second theatre space will be created in the Civic’s basement level.
