THE ENVIRONMENT Agency is to widen the bank of the river Dearne and carry out maintenance works to protect Darton against future flooding.
Engineers have designed improvements to the 270 metre-long bank because the extra width will help it to withstand erosion from extreme water levels more effectively in future.
They will also continue to carry out annual routine maintenance in the area that includes grass-cutting and channel clearance.
Residents were told of the proposed works in a report handed out at a drop-in session on Monday at Kexborough Methodist Church.
It was organised by Barnsley council to allow those affected by the floods to meet all the agencies involved in the cleanup operation. Present were representatives for the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, the council and the Primary Care Trust.
