FLASH flooding incidents are on the rise in Barnsley, according to councillors tasked with looking lessons learned since severe floods devastated the borough ten years ago.

An increase in flash flooding - where heavy rainfall leaves drains unable to cope due to the amount of water - was highlighted in the group’s findings presented to cabinet members on Wednesday.

Coun Jeff Ennis, who spoke on behalf of the group, said that while an increase in flash flooding is a worry, new technology will soon help.

He said: “The group raised particular concerns with flash flooding events, such as in Penistone recently, and we welcome information that in-cab GPS technology will shortly be used to do drainage management in the borough.”
