THE lack of public toilets has shocked a man who has returned to the Dearne after an absence of 30 years.
Pensioner Ron Hailes originates from the Dearne and moved to Canada, but returned to Thurnscoe last year. He has been concerned by what he has found, particularly the lack of public toilets.
“We have to get something done about this area because the council doesn’t seem to care,” he said. “There are a lot of elderly people living in the village and many of them dare not go out because of the lack of public toilets. The last ones, which were near the library, were removed and so the elderly have nowhere to go.”
He challenged the Dearne area forum when it claimed that toilets had not been raised as an issue for the Think Local programme.
“I’m determined not to let this drop and intend to campaign to get some back in Thurnscoe.” He has suggested that members of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, who are Barnsley Council employees, might be recruited to lock and unlock a gated facility, but has been told they could not do it.
