EMERGENCY funding has been secured at the 11th hour to save 13 school bus services which carry more than 1,100 pupils to and from Barnsley schools every day.
BrightBus, which operates a fleet of green double decker buses, runs services to and from six schools across the Barnsley area, carrying abut 1,120 pupils per day in total. The firm announced in May that is was closing for good with the loss of all 90 jobs at the North Anston-based firm.
Managing director Mick Strafford said it was time to ‘call it a day’ after 12 months of deteriorating health.
Transport bosses from South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive stepped in to co-ordinate cover for all 78 routes at risk across the county and have now found replacement or alternative travel for 32 affected schools.
The six schools affected in the Barnsley area are Dearne ALC, Netherwood ALC, Horizon Community College, Barnsley Academy, Wath Comprehensive and St Pius X RC.
