EX-BARNSLEY player Roy Cooling is pictured with members of John Street School, Wombwell, football team in the 1933 to 1934 season. The team: Eric Payling (captain), Ernest Woodcock, Eric Wood, Harry Scholes, Jack Annetts, Gerald Barber, Stanley Oxley, Reg McQuillan, Tom Cooling, Roy Cooling, Maurice Noble.

Roy was signed by Barnsley when he was a teenager and was a successful marksman, scoring a number of goals in crucial matches.

In 1945 to 1946 during the Second World War, Barnsley was in the North League, but the war finished shortly after the start of the season. The North League included such famous clubs as Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton etc.

One of the most-important matches ended in a brilliant 4-2 victory against Sunderland when he scored twice. Gordon Pallister netted a penalty and Jimmy Baxter blasted in his first goal for the Reds.

He also played in a third-round FA Cup match against Newcastle United before a crowd of 60,384.

The Barnsley team was Holdcroft, Cunningham, Pallister, Mansley, Wilson, Logan, Smith, Cooling, Robledo, Baxter and Kelly.
