PLAYING their first competitive home game of the season, a young Dodworth team produced an outstanding Yorkshire Cup first round 30-20 victory against Brotherton. It was a classic display which matched any in the club's history. With the forwards gaining yardage with ease in the first 20 minutes, Dodworth were able to set up the platform which would eventually carry them through at the end. Following a movement which saw the ball pass through several pairs of hands, scrum half Daniel Blanchard jinked his way through numerous would-be tackles to open the try scoring account when touching down to the right of the posts with second row forward Gareth Duckett making the conversion. Only a short period of time passed before new signing, second row forward Carl Wragg, powered over from what appeared an impossible position, managing to ground the ball with three or four defenders trying to hold him back. Gareth Duckett completed the first half tally when stepping off his right foot he left the Brotherton defence flat footed to force his way over the try line. Shortly before half-time Dodworth showed a little disarray when loose forward Joe Atkinson was sent to the sin bin after a series of robust tackles. The Brotherton outfit took advantage of this and a chip kick over the defence saw their left winger ground the ball in the corner. Early in the second half Brotherton were able to recoup the difference in the scoreline and when the full time whistle blew the teams were drawing 18-18. Under the cup rules a further 10 minutes each way was played and this was when the extra fitness of the Dodworth outfit began to tell. Stand-off half Chris Duckett made some superb breaks upfield which led to Rob Hodgson having a try disallowed. Brotherton kicked a penalty then, after further Brotherton pressure, centre Tom Atkinson scored the try of the match when he stole the ball from his opposite number, eluding the first pair of tacklers and racing upfield with only the full back to beat where he executed the perfect sidestep to score under the posts. Having run a distance of 75 metres during the second period of extra time, Duckett lofted an extremely high up and under which left the Brotherton full back floundering and prop forward Dave Roebuck pounced on the loose ball for the match winning try. The referee's man of the match was Shaun Wragg. Shaws Skips men of the match was Joe Atkinson, Dave Roebuck and Chris Duckett. Dodworth have drawn Beverley in the next round which will be played on Saturday September 29 (away). This weekend Dodworth are at home to Moldgreen (Huddersfield) at the Welfare ground (2.30 pm).

Hoyland Vikings were unable to come back from a poor opening half in their top-of-the-table home match with unbeaten Lindley Swifts. The Swifts attacked down the slope in the first half and for all their efforts, Hoyland were unable to prevent them from running in five unanswered tries and by half-time the Vikings trailed 22-0. For the second period Hoyland started to gain confidence even after conceding another early try and with strong running from the forwards, they were able to get their first points with two well-worked tries scored by Gaz Davies and Gareth Berry, the latter Dave Parkin converted. Just as Hoyland saw a comeback on the cards Lindley extended their lead with another try. The game finished 32-10 to Lindley who moved to the top of the table. Hoyland Vikings A went down 62–0 to Dearne Valley Bulldogs A in the seventh division local derby. Despite the heavy score, Hoyland made a good start but once Dearne broke through the Hoyland defence, Dearne soon started to make the scoreboard tick. At half-time Hoyland regrouped and came out fighting in order to give their supporters something to cheer about with outstanding running coming in the shape of Jonathan Robinson, Pete Willis and Jason Bondy and although Dearne continued to run the game, the Vikings never gave up. The man of the match went to Sam Breaver for his never say die attitude.  Hoyland's first team take on Sharlston at Elsecar CC tomorrow and the second team are away at Rochdale Mayfield. Both kick-off at 2.30pm.
