Barnsley came from behind to draw at Preston North End on Saturday and pick up their first away Championship point of the season.

The hosts took the lead midway through the first half but the Reds were level within a minute when Brad Potts opened his goals account for the club. Preston started and finished the game on top but Barnsley had long periods of pressure while both sides missed good chances in an entertaining contest.

Paul Heckingbottom made two changes from the side that beat Sunderland 3-0 before the international break, with George Moncur and Harvey Barnes both dropping to the bench despite scoring against the Black Cats.

Into the side came new signing central midfielder Gary Gardner as as well as winger Ryan Hedges as Barnsley kept their 4-4-1 formation with Joe Williams just in front of the back four. Preston should have gone in front after eight minutes when Jordan Hugill fired wide from close range after Sean Maguire powered into the left side of Barnsley's box and pulled the ball back.

The hosts took the lead in the 23rd minute when Tom Barkuizen got away from Jason McCarthy on the left wing and floated in a cross which Maguire headed into the bottom left corner. But Barnsley levelled almost instantly with their first real attack of the game as Adam Hammill provided a fine cross from the right wing and Potts supplied the finish. It was his first goal for the club and the first Preston had conceded in open play in the Championship this season.

The Reds had been poor before equalising but their goal really seemed to bring them to life. Potts could have got a second on 40 minutes but he blazed over from the eye of the box after former Doncaster Rovers defender Tommy Spurr headed a Gardner cross straight to him. Barnsley almost took the lead just after the restart when Hedges burst into the Preston box on the right and his cross started a goalmouth scramble in which both Potts then Ike Ugbo got touches before the ball was scrambled off the line.

Then Preston nearly took the lead but Paul Huntington's header from point blank range hit his team-mate Stefy Mavididi. Barnsley substitute Moncur forced a save after coming in from the left wing and shooting straight at Chris Maxwell from 15 yards. Matty Pearson had to clear off the Barnsley after Williams diverted a corner towards his goal then substitute Barnes fired over from close range after Maxwell dropped a McCarthy cross. Davies then made a superb save in the 94th minute to tip over a close range effort from Maguire.
