A DRESS CODE, speaking test, formal qualifications and CCTV in cabs may become compulsory for taxi drivers under considerations for a review of taxi licensing in Barnsley.

The measures were revealed to councillors during discussions for a national shake-up of taxi legislation recommended to government by an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

Those recommendations address issues such as cross-border hiring and developing a national database to record refused and revoked applications for licences.

But Kate Liddall, senior licensing officer at Barnsley Council, said the changes proposed by the APPG provided the council with an opportunity to look at its own policies and procedures to see where improvements can be made.
