A NEW watersports venue as been launched by canoeists at Wath-upon-Dearne.

Yorkshire and the Humber region of the British Canoe Union (BCU) met for the first time on 300 acre Manvers Lake on Wednesday to show the potential for all forms of canoeing and kayaking on the former colliery site.

The lake is more than 500 m across which makes it ideal for training for the Olympic discipline of sprint canoeing and will be managed by Manvers Canoe Club.

“Manvers lake is superb for canoeing, it is big enough, the water quality is good, it is in a population centre and there are a lot of paddlers in the area looking for a home base,” said Chris Hawkesworth, national planning and facilities manager for the BCU.

The lakeside is being developed by Express Parks with housing and retail to the south and west and a golf club and driving range to the north.
