BARNSLEY’S population has grown only slightly over the last year - roughly in line with the national level of growth - latest figures show.

The population of the borough now stands at 241,200. It had been growing faster than the national average in recent years but last year it grew by just 0.8 per cent, with about 1,900 more people living here in 2016 than in the year before.

Barnsley’s population has grown every year since 2000 when it was 217,800. Since then has gone up 10.7 per cent with an extra 23,400 people living here - slightly more than the capacity of Oakwell.

Over that same period nationally the population has risen 11.5 per cent.
