RESIDENTS who live on unadopted roads in Barnsley will no longer have waste bins collected directly from outside their homes, after a refuse truck apparently overturned.
The council is telling residents it has been advised by the Health and Safety Executive to stop using bin lorries on roads it does not maintain.
That means residents will have to wheel their bins to the nearest adopted highway and that has already caused outrage in communities where the policy has been implemented.
The new policy is being introduced across the borough from the west, with councillors who represent the Penistone district already contacted by residents.
It is understood the new policy is the result of an incident where a vehicle toppled onto its side while being manoeuvred on an unadopted road.
In a letter to residents, Barnsley Council has said: "We have been advised by the Health and Safety Executive that to minimise this risk collection vehicles should not leave the highway.
"As a result we are asking that you place your waste and recycling bins at the nearest part of the public highway."
Locations affected have been visited by council officials as well as collection crew members to check their suitability.
