CAN you help solve the mystery of the Mapplewell Park pillars?

They were taken down by the council 14 months ago to be restored after the right hand one was damaged by a vehicle.

Since being rebuilt one resident is convinced the stone gate pillars at the park’s entrance are facing the wrong way, and he wants anyone who remembers their original positions to come forward.

John Race, of Staincross Common, told the Chronicle the matching pillars, bearing engraved Staincross and Mapplewell and Miners’ Welfare Scheme signs, should stand at the same height facing outwards through the park entrance.

He said: “We need someone who remembers them before they were taken down to confirm this. Then they can be reinstated as they were.

“The job should be done properly so they match rather than the amateurish way the council has rebuilt them.”
