PIT worker Gary Rennison is blazing a trail as Barnsley's hottest hedgehog hunter.

He is employed as a colliery engineer but tomorrow will use his helmet and lamp to search out prickly mammals instead of coal.

As a Round Table volunteer it's his job to check that no hedgehogs have made a home in the Locke Park bonfire before it is lit. He has to climb inside the 50ft pile of wood to carry out his search.

His Round Table mates have nicknamed him Bilbo becasue of his size and member Nigel Tazzyman said: "He's small so he can get in the bonfire and do his search."

Members will today unload three arcticulated lorry loads of wood from Premdor for use in the Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Fay Vass, of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, said bonfires should be built on the day they are to be lit to stop hedgehogs hibernating in them.
