A MEMORIAL to mark the centenary of the public hall disaster which killed 16 children will be held on Friday afternoon.
The youngsters were crushed and trampled to death as they queued to see a show. Many of the children’s relatives will attend the service.
One of the organisers, Jayne Dowle, said: “For some of them it’s part of their family folklore and a lot of them want to get together to share the memories and talk about it.”
She added: “It’s not just about the children who died, it helps us to remember the importance of all children.”
Proceedings will start at 2pm, when the Mayor, Coun Len Picken, will unveil a plaque in the civic hall, the former public hall.
There will then be a blessing at the war memorial outside the town hall followed by a reception inside.
