HUNDREDS of council staff are expected to lose their jobs under a new wave of efficiency cuts.

And thousands more face the uncertainty of having their posts scrutinised, as Barnsley Council looks to save £9m over three years.

The news comes as the council announced the council tax will increase by 3.9 per cent in April. That means over ten years typical council tax in Barnsley has gone up by £380, a 74 per cent increase.

Barnsley Council leader believes the latest rise represented a good deal and said: "It is a good budget. We have kept council tax below inflation and we are investing in services and flood defences.

"It is never easy but the council finances are in a very good position to move forward."
