TWO Barnsley men have been selected to be included in a hall of fame which is designed to boost the region's image.
Sir Michael Parkinson, the broadcaster, and Ashley Jackson, the artist, are among the seven icons who received 'Oscars' at a ceremony in Leeds last week.
Also included in the hall of fame were Fred Trueman, the Yorkshire cricketer; Sir Ken Morrison, the supermarket executive; Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2 million for cancer charities; William Wilberforce, who led the campaign against the British slave trade and Dame Judi Dench, the actress.
Ashley said:"It's a fantastic achievement for me because I am a secondary modern school lad. Two of the icons come from Barnsley and the oscars were made by a Barnsley sculptor, Graham Ibbeson."
The organisers, a regional newspaper, the Yorkshire Bank and Yorkshire Television, hope to make it an annual event.
One of the aims of the scheme is to create role models for young people. All seven are said to be motivational people.
