Meet the moggy who has received a letter from the Queen to mark her 20th birthday next month.

Elsie, whose birthday is on Saturday March 15, was adopted by Catherine Ward, 42, of Midland Road, Royston in 1988, who was was studying to become a nurse.

But it was her daughter Olivia, 10, who wrote to the Queen to celebrate her pet's life.

Olivia said: "I thought it would be a really nice thing.

"Elsie is getting old and not many cats live that long."

Olivia sent photos of Elsie to the Queen but received a reply from her lady-in-waiting saying the Queen only sent telegrams to her subjects celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary or their 100th birthday.

She thanked Olivia for the letter and said the Queen was very glad to hear from her.

Olivia, who has a springer spaniel called Timmy, added: "Elsie has a very active life.
