A VIGILANT postwoman came to the rescue of an elderly lady who didn't realise there was a fire in her kitchen.
Jamie Whittaker, of Worsbrough, was on her rounds on Brinckman Street yesterday morning when she noticed smoke seeping through the woman's slightly ajar door.
Jamie knew the occupant was 92 and lived alone so pushed open the door to investigate.
She heard alarms going off and saw the kitchen was smoke logged, the lady was in the living room oblivious to the fact that her toaster had caught fire, according to fire crews.
Jamie waited with the woman, who had difficulty walking, until firemen from Barnsley station arrived to help her out and put out the fire.
A spokesman for the station told the Chronicle: "The lady was in no immediate danger when we got there. It was lucky the postal worker was there to see this happen, it's care in the community. From a fire service point of view we had fitted the alarms about two years ago and it's good to see they are active."
The lady was checked out by a paramedic at the scene and allowed to go back into her home after fire-fighters had ventilated the property.
