SPARE land next to an Athersley church is undergoing transformation and being turned into a play area and bike track.
The site, next to the Blessed Sacrament Church, has been unused for years but over the last couple of years church members, local residents and Groundwork Dearne Valley have been working on putting a project together.
Creation of a new children's play area, bike track with jumps, seating and planting of shrubs is now underway.
Funding has been obtained from Wren, Community Green Spaces fund and the Stronger Neighbourhoods Initiative and the remaining cash needed to complete the project came from ASDA after Sue Hall, local resident and church member, applied to the ASDA Foundation.
Sue said: "The play area and bike track is much needed in Athersley South. We want somewhere for the local kids to be able to play safely."
Sister Miriam Bruder said: "For safety reasons, temporary fencing will be installed around the site while work is taking place. This means that the existing green space will be inaccessible.
"We urge people to keep away from the fenced area while the work is taking place."
