MEET William - Elsecar Preservation Group's newest recruit.

He joined the heritage railway yesterday when his new owner brought him back to South Yorkshire.

Mike Hart, 56, bought the steam engine from a couple who had kept him on a Midlands line for several years.

The steam enthusiast, who runs a railway engineering company in Rotherham, said he was chuffed to bring the engine home.

He said: "The reason I got it was because I thought it would be great to bring it back to South Yorkshire.

"It was made by Thomas Hill in Kilnhurst. They sold them, built them and maintained them there.

"I thought it would be great to bring a piece of history back to the county it comes from."

Sentinel steam locomotives were considered to have an unusual design as they all had vertical boilers.

They were used as shunting engines and this particular engine spent most of its working life at cloth manufacturers, Courtaulds Ltd, in Grimsby.
